soon after the book’s release, there was growing concern with its potential to stir up racial tensions within the university of california, berkeley. black and asian students expressed concerns and demands that the “field negro” (roudané) be “disposed of.” within the national literary scene, “the main area of attack was lyrical protest with poets and critics declaring their solidarity with ‘negro’ ideas and/or people.

the central theme of roudané’s second novel is the rise to power of a black african jazz musician (a now fairly common american genre). roudané’s plot is an amusing and innovative satire of the 1960s american popular music scene and of segregated american culture. it should be mentioned that the novel was published in 1965, almost two years before the watts riot in august 1965 in los angeles. yet the novel (and attendant the character roudané) is not a rejoinder to the social conditions which triggered the riots in watts and elsewhere across the united states.

the story of this note, written by a slave in a prison cell where he had been chained to a stake, is the most discussed aspect of this narrative work, because it strikes at the very heart of religion. critics have made much of the idea that the author of this note set his master and mistress free and fled to escape a possible martyrdom at the stake.
this uses the double meaning of the surname to suggest that the officer is more than commonly rude. it originally meant an oddity or odd job, and was probably used in british naval regiments in the 18th century. the term became popular in the 19th century, and by the 1930s the meaning had become narrowed to meaning anyone who did something unusual or peculiar. fair lemonade is a variant of this meaning, used in the us south. an early use of fair catch from around the same period is in a piece of work, here i stand: poems (1937). ‘i believe i know what i am doing, but for a combination of unknown. ‘the fair catch is here, the fair catch is there, ‘this is the case of the fair catch.'”
