the national have never been one to limit their creative output to the confines of a studio. its been a part of the nationals dna to experiment and expand on their sound as much as possible, and sleep well beast is no exception. much of the album sounds like other songs the national have released, but its also the first to feature a choir, a group of pre-production the national has often used for live shows, including a mini-concerto in the middle of murder me, rachael, and so far, so fast. the national want to be as big as the classic rock bands they admire, and theyve spent the past five years doing everything in their power to make that happen. sleep well beast is their big break.

so surprised you want to dance with me now: it wasnt so long ago that the national began playing their first-ever headline show at the red hat amphitheater, and the venue has been an outlet for the band since. theyre still going strong, and after a decade of shows, the band is no stranger to the stage. theres no telling how the album will hold up live, but if sleep well beast is any indication, the band is at the height of their powers. the best song on the album is day i die, and that may be just the tip of the iceberg for the national. still, the idea of a country-pop album in the vein of songs of innocence is one to behold.

well run like were awesome: for someone who spent the early part of his career trying to prove his mettle as a drummer, devendorf has certainly proven his worth as a sideman. his abilities as a producer and mix engineer have never been in question, but when he moved into frontman-ship, the band needed someone who could get over the borders of his drumming. thats where you come in, bryan, and the worlds got the best version of the national since the one on alligator in 1996. were awesome, which is made up of a handful of songs from every album the national has ever made, is just another example of how well-oiled the band is. there are those who believe this album will be a swansong, and while the nationals not-so-secret desire to prove theyre still relevant has led to some less than stellar releases, were awesome is a reminder of how much fun they still have.
