I’m using data-structures through C++ that include pointers. It is often quite easy to inadvertently introduce dangling pointers.
Suppose for example, that in the following code, p is the dangling pointer:
int *p = new int();
delete p;

Shouldn’t the compiler warn me or do something to detect this? I am aware that if the code had a better understanding of the scope of the pointer p, the code could be improved by checking if there is anything inside the block, but I’m sure I have seen compilers deal with dangling pointers.

This is where the compiler cannot help you, and your only chance is through using good design.
By design, if you use pointers to “pretend” that the pointer refers to some memory you have not allocated then the compiler can’t help you.
The only way you can reasonably help you with this is to ensure that the stack is never corrupted.
That isn’t enough. It’s a matter of understanding and good design. This is best demonstrated by example.
Consider:
int* p;

// Note: The temporary “new int”
// is not crucial to this example.
p = new int();

// (1) p points to the memory allocated by the “new”
// and the memory we can’t access until we delete it.

// (2) Now we deallocate it – and other programs that
// “look” at p will only find the address in memory
// pointed to by (1). That’s a dangling pointer

delete p;

// not used again until we reallocate it.
