samurai shodown 64: warriors rage was released in october 16, 1998 in arcades. in terms of distribution, it was never officially released outside of japan, although digital copies are available for several countries from third-party sites. it is the second game in samurai shodown series and the eighth in the official chronology (tenth if considered the non-canonical games). although internally codenamed asura, the official name for the title is samurai shodown 64: warriors rage in order to separate it from the older game, which was also codenamed asura but did not receive a game boy color version.

the game is one of snks most popular games, due to its fast and easy gameplay, tight controls, long lifespan, and well-balanced characters. it is also one of the few fighting games in the genre to use up to three different characters instead of just one. a more recent low-scoring game than the typical one, there is a good chance to get that perfect match with other players.

the production quality of samurai spirits on its home arcade cabinets was appalling. the game was designed to be fast paced, along the same lines as samurai shodown 64, but also to be playable in short sessions. the low-frame-rate joint is said to have been achieved by a combination of software and hardware. samples of the in-game audio were leaked on home consoles, which still sound excellent.
the game features some of the most exciting mechanics in recent fighting game history. it introduced most of the core mechanics that come together to form the backbone of the subsequent samurai shodown titles: rage arts, rage smash, counter rush, smash rush, and the super rush. the user is permitted to select certain moves for their existing rage arts in sequence and unleash special attacks. each rage arts has a cool-down period, and certain moves can be executed with the rage arts still active, to bypass the cool-down. other characters can make a hyper rush attack by slamming their buttons to perform a special move.
the final boss fight in samurai spirits is a long and tense skirmish between genjuro and nakoruru, which requires careful co-ordination and timing to win. this is a unique feature of the samurai shodown series, where bosses generally are fought in an all-out brawl to kill them quickly, before they do more damage to the winner.
samurai spiritsplaystion is a 3d version of the arcade game. unlike the arcades, the game offers training lessons and the opportunity to fight the real-life bosses. in offline, players can continue fighting until they earn sufficient funds to purchase link cards that are required to unlock an unlimited number of characters. the single-player mode, much like the home ports of samurai shodown 64 , is not very well received.
