A late-night midnight game.

Went to a random house in the area that a group of friends were playing through.

For what was supposed to be an 8 hour long midnight game, we were kicked out 20 minutes in. It’s a fun multiplayer experience, but the way the game is designed and the latency control of the online features makes it unsuitable for long sessions of gameplay.

Action-RPG combat

Gameplay for the most part is centered on turning and jumping around the battle field. The movement speed is great for picking up the pace or avoiding attacks, while the combat is somewhat fast-paced. Players can block, dodge, and counter depending on their current situation. Combat is a mix of auto-attacks, parries, and some forms of magic.

Balance is a big part of any action-RPG, and is reflected in the game’s progression. Each class of enemy has a different combat style to approach from, and there’s an option to use a combination of enemies to practice skills or access a secondary stat. Equipment items come with an XP bonus that scales based on how much experience is spent in a class and the amount of HP that is lost.

The choices that are made in battle are fairly complicated and have a great impact on your skill tree. Different class-specific skills are unlocked as you level up, so you’re given the opportunity to grow your character as you play through the game.

Quests and story

Playing through the game, you’ll level up, obtain loot, and decide how to distribute the loot (keeping in mind your stats, not the specific stats like Strength, Intelligence, etc). Certain rare items have a secondary reward called “bonuses” and a third called the “Rarity,” which is used for the XP to unlock new classes.

There’s a vast selection of quests, from typical power up the action scenes to massive boss battles. A fair amount of quests take you off the beaten path, as well as across the map to find treasure chests to loot.

The story in the game is narrated by the grand old narrator from the Legend of Zelda series, and the words flow at a pace that keeps things interesting. Replayability is a big factor for me as a gamer. I would have enjoyed the story much more if it had been told in a single player format. That would have given the choice of leaving early or staying late, which for a short game like this would have been an enjoyable experience.
