Overlays: A Digital Photoshop Dictionary

Photoshop refers to layers as objects. Layers have a different kind of information associated with them, depending on the view you’re in while editing the image. There are two main types of layers.

Transparency layer

The transparency layer (the uppermost layer in the Photoshop window) is the only one that is visible in standard views. All of the other layers are visible only while the transparency layer is set to show. The transparency layer enables you to retain part of the original image underneath so that the portion of the overlay image is visible. The rest of the background image is hidden. (For more on layers and the transparency layer, see Figure 5-1.)

Bitmap layers

Bitmap layers contain information about each individual pixel in an image. When you’re editing an image, bitmap layers provide information about such things as the brightness of the pixels and whether a particular pixel is transparent or opaque. (See Figure 5-2.)

The graphic on the right side of Figure 5-2 illustrates four different Photoshop views. In an image with multiple bitmap layers, the uppermost layer is always transparent. The other layers are visible in the other three views.

Note that the layers don’t show up in the Transparency view, as shown in the bitmap on the left. In addition, in the Transparency view, the alpha value (a numerical representation of the transparency) of the topmost layer isn’t visible. When the Transparency view is on, you can choose to display the layer’s alpha channel if you want to edit the layers. See Chapter 3 for more on the alpha channel.

Recently, in the field of logic circuits, the demand for high-speed logic circuits is increasingly increased, so that the conventional complementary MOS (hereinafter referred to as CMOS) circuits are approaching their limits of intrinsic operating speed. Further, when the operating speed of such a conventional CMOS circuit increases, its power consumption increases because of the increase in the number of the nodes in the circuit. In particular, in a dynamic random access memory (DRAM), as a peripheral circuit of DRAM, since it is necessary to operate the memory array composed of memory cells for storing data, it is most important to lower the operating speed of the peripheral circuit to lower the power consumption of DRAM.
