at the very least, the spooky atmosphere is maintained through the length of the book: the whole story from beginning to end. i have rarely read a novel which concentrates so much on one character, and that is what makes this so gripping. in fact, laski makes the story so linear and one dimensional, that we find ourselves feeling sorry for caroline as her life slowly spirals out of control. she has no lover or husband; is a lousy car sales assistant, constantly being taken advantage of by the aggressive owner, and is constantly disoriented by her constant bad health.
in fact, the first indication of the change in the normality of this flat, stable life comes when caroline receives a mysterious invitation. it has a mysterious woman in red silk at the bottom of it, and it seems to be personalized by a man. thats when caroline starts putting the pieces together.
the story moves in chapters, each narrated by a character. the narrative always surrounds what happened to caroline after leaving her flat on that fateful night. it is a very personal account, told first in the first person, and then in the third. as we read, we are running up a suspenseful cliff-hanger, with what is going to happen to caroline at the end of the book completely unknown, until the very last pages.
i did enjoy this book and i quite liked the character. he strikes me as a man that wants to have money; his finance from business dealings is all out of the blue and this seems like an asset that he used to make it a bit more difficult for others to take advantage of him. this can often be the case for thieves and conmen, i am not sure that we would get a particular sympathetic character, but he certainly is a good man, with good intentions. i can imagine myself reading this.
the messages in this book are metaphoric and symbolic. a childs love of the unattainable encapsulates one of the subjects. the images are symbolic of the changing moods of the book. the cover shows an image of a tower and a tower-like structure is shown inside. throughout the book, a tower is a subject that people want and are often helpless to obtain. though the reader may never see such an image as a tower, the book and the cover suggest one, and gives a real sense of the structure suggested by the title.
finally, we dont have a name for this form of fiction, because its rare even in authors like shirley jackson, who devote themselves almost exclusively to writing the kind of story youd recognize from comic books. the two best examples of this form are the works of robert aickmans the dark side of love, and the de camp/howard books, which used that technique. in those works, a set-up by the main character causes a plot to unfold with dozens of unrelated sets of offing baddies and as many scheming ones, all with various bizarre twists and turns, all to tie up the thimey plot. this sort of plot device is referred to in print as a libretto plot, and it consists of two basic parts: the set-up by the main character, in which the reader is introduced to the plot, and the revelation of the truth of the story, which usually involves realising some kind of moral for the characters lives. of course, the revelation of the truth is just to give the plot an ending with a conveniently defined good and bad. the two creators of the best of this genre never, to my knowledge, even mentioned using the term libretto plot. its just that its a particular kind of narrative device that gives particular kinds of stories a particular kind of power. just think of how much more horrible a battletaken experience is when youve followed for months or even years the adventures of a group of people in an organised, and seemingly endless, crime. its much more exciting because youre rarely sure what may come next, and because youre never sure if you know the protagonists thoughts or what their motives really are. the converse is also true. in a completely unrelated sense, think of the harm that comes when the minds and thoughts of the characters arent known to the audience. often enough, when the audience is confronted with a baddie, he will get up as well. often enough, the audience will be given a drink up by the murderer. its one of the best feeling moments in those books.
