I know that this is a very subjective debate, so hear me out.
Python’s got the obvious edge over Groovy. Groovy’s up to par for what you can do in Javascript, but only because Javascript is a really efficient language at what it does. When it comes to actual Java development, Groovy is a joke. It hasn’t been released for Java since it was rushed out because of’space constraints’, and even then, it’s been such a massive disappointment compared to Java 5.0 that it hasn’t even been supported by the Groovy team themselves.
It’s a pity, because Groovy’s features are really quite amazing, and I’ve really enjoyed working with it. I just can’t shake the feeling that Python is the way to go. It’s just a better language than Groovy, and the current industry support is certainly better. I feel that Groovy will never be really accepted in the real industry because of the fact that it was rushed out before a decent release.
Anyway, to give you my take on things, I think Groovy and Jython are a weird comparison. They are both compiled languages that are both learning technologies. Groovy is a learning technology while Jython is not, yet they compare with each other. If Groovy was written in C# or Java, then it would stand on its own. But because it was written in Groovy, it’s trying to play the language game with Java. And the language game doesn’t suit it in the least.
