the complexity of an antivirus suite is something that tends to grab headlines. eset nod32 antivirus premium retails at $99.99, but it contains features that make it a reasonable choice for some owners of more advanced computers. it includes functions that aren’t found in other free versions, and it upgrades to work with more recent hardware. on the other hand, most home pc users will find that the free version and the basic version will take care of all their current needs. eset nod32 antivirus premium will simply include too many features for most users, and at some point it will cost more than a properly maintained pc.

when my desktop pc crashed, i was pleased to know the only thing gone was nod32. i closed the program, rebooted, and opened its main window. a pop-up window has a help link and a blue button called “scanning your computer” – not what i’d expect from antivirus software. i pressed the button, and the scan began.

nod32 reveals its work with help messages, context-sensitive dialog boxes, and ok buttons that are grayed out. that’s because the program can’t complete every step of its deep scan. windows keeps rejecting the detailed info and stopping the scan.

the antivirus had found several fake programs, which either attempt to fake a virus, or carry a virus. none of them are trustworthy. when i tried a few more, the same warnings about not being a safe way to get files (windows store apps) but not a virus occurred. that’s typical of these programs. some even sell you fake anti-malware software.

Besides PC performance, the major criteria in antivirus choice is running cost and system impact. To keep its prices down, ESET limits its protection to scanning only Windows local files, which is no bad thing when you have a large multi-OS file system. No matter how many traces of malware the system might be carrying, ESET NOD32 will ignore them. If a threat escapes ESETs protection, your system is in no worse shape than it was before. The only potential downside of ESETs narrow focus is that it leaves non-Windows users without antivirus protection.
While lots of money is being spent on research into an ideal antivirus, most of the innovations have only resulted in a few new tools. Nearly all new antiviruses keep the same detection, report, and clean-up engines as their predecessors. The trend towards increased AI is nowhere more evident than in the detection engine. This is the place where it matters most, and ESET is no exception.

Windows Defender (formerly known as PC Tools) is the default and only antivirus tool for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and most modern Windows systems. Since its inception in 1998, it has received constant updates to keep pace with new threats. We recommend that system owners run Defender as their initial line of defense, then use a proper antivirus tool only when they are confident that Defender is not working to protect them.
