the movie has a lot of really strong performances, and the story is really entertaining. im really glad that elton and bernie didnt give up on their passion project to make it. its a lot of fun. i recommend it.

elton johns rocketman is rated r (under 17 requires supervised adult) and is out in theaters everywhere on january 14, 2019. its a remake of the 1975 biopic and is directed by dexter fletcher and helmed by dexter filkins (penelope).

for all its star-power and grand spectacle, rocketmans heart is in the right place. egerton makes an impressive and sensitive elton; turning in an understated performance that underlines the film and its message. when his wife is brutally murdered in a car crash, elton is momentarily lost and unable to cope; a wayward, disconnected figure, he seemingly teeters on the brink of a mental breakdown. egerton is able to navigate some of the more emotional moments with grace and skill; he is a good elton, and, in particular, a convincing one. this is a very english film, and its heart is in the right place. whether it can put a dent in the legacy of borhap remains to be seen.

the songs here are a mixture of cover versions and originals, though two of eltons finest are conspicuous by their absence: tiny dancer (a staple at any elton gig) and a version of his classic something about the way you look tonight. furthermore, there are some interesting musical nods to the past, such as the appearances of guest stars tina turner, george michael and david bowie. most of the covers, however, are familiar, though it is hard to fault the musical firepower of the cast, particularly elton, who really does seem to be having fun. although the film is earnest and fluffy, it is ultimately a celebration of elton john and his music, and it feels like he is delivering his own setlist. elton certainly looks the part, and the music certainly does the rest.
