Japanese ReviewsA north-east Queensland teenager has been banned from the open sea for 10 years after admitting he threw a shark from a kayak.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was last week sentenced to two years’ probation and 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to the charge of unlawfully removing a shark from Australian waters.

The teenager was eventually taken to the local hospital.

‘It has always been okay for us to take sharks’

ACI safety manager Terry O’Gorman said it was the first time in Queensland that a case like this had been dealt with in court, and that it was hard to comprehend how the teenager could have done such a thing.

“It is certainly a rather unusual incident,” he said.

“We probably in most cases would have seen this as an opportunity to save the shark … it is a bit of a mystery. It is hard to know why the young man did what he did.”
