Android: Preventing UI element from losing focus when orientation changes

I have an Activity which has an ImageView component in it. The image is supposed to be shown as soon as the activity is opened (when the activity is first accessed), and when the activity is rotated (I believe it happens through onConfigurationChanged), the image should be hidden (implemented in the onCreate of the activity) and then shown again when the activity is rotated back.
The problem is when I rotate the activity to the portrait state, it is not returning to the original state (when the image was shown at the start of the activity).
