most electric arc heat flux calculators assume that the structure is an homogeneous mass. this assumption is easy to understand but for many spaces in the real world it is not accurate. in most cases a structure will consist of an array of materials: steel, concrete, wood, stone, and so on. each of these materials has its own properties that must be incorporated into the model in order to obtain an accurate heat flux estimation. in this paper, i will describe the development of a 3-d heat flux calculation code that can accurately calculate heat fluxes between two structures that have a range of density, wall thickness, metal, and concrete thickness. the fundamental idea of the code is that the heat flux between two structures depends on the heat flux between a structure’s subcomponents. these subcomponents are defined as all of the individual components that make up the structure, excluding the outer boundary of the structure and any possible air gaps. therefore, the heat flux at a connection between two structures is equal to the sum of the individual component heat fluxes.
a heat flux between two structures can be calculated using a direct method in which the heat flux is assumed to be uniform over the length of the connection and a distributed method in which the heat flux is assumed to be proportional to the density distribution over the length of the connection. for a more accurate distributed method, the subcomponents must be resolved in to their individual pieces. therefore, i developed a 3-d code that fully resolves the individual pieces of a structure in order to calculate the heat flux between structures. a prototype of the code has been implemented on personal computers with an x86 processor and is able to model structures with complex geometry. in the following, i will describe the heat flux calculation code developed in this paper, and how a structure can be represented with discrete subcomponents. in addition, i will describe the properties of the subcomponents with respect to their heat flux contribution, and a few applications of this code.

once the desired voltage has been reached, the dc current must be converted to dc to provide the current sufficient to operate the electronics. this requires a dc-to-dc converter. the converter may require extra current in order to provide for fluctuations in the peak ac power. this results in a somewhat unpredictable current. to account for this, a step-up transformer may be used.
