History of AutoCAD

AutoCAD was first created by engineering student John Walker in December of 1982 as a solution for his AutoCAD teacher to be able to do his own drafting with a low-cost drawing tablet. While in a meeting with his teacher, he created an intuitive menu-based drafting system that evolved into a professional level product. Soon after, in January of 1983, the Engineering Department at the University of Utah published an article about Autodesk’s creation of a computer-aided drafting software. Autodesk was purchased by Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in 1986. At the time of the acquisition, Autodesk had two major products, AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. By 2003, Autodesk sold 1 million units of AutoCAD.

In August of 2003, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD Web, a web-based version of AutoCAD.

AutoCAD vs. Microstation

Since both AutoCAD and Microstation have been present for years, their specifications differ and they use different file formats. AutoCAD can import DXF, DWG, and DGN files while Microstation can import DXF, DWG, DGN, and TPL files. Microstation is also compatible with AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD, and is designed to run on Windows and Unix platforms.
