One of the major strengths of this program is the ability to search the database in two ways:

• Searching by a specific player – For each player you can see the game history of all his games, all the games in which he wanted to play with any other players, along with biographical information of both sides of the games.
• Searching by specific opening – Here you can either pick a specific opening or a particular line and then search for game history in all matches between these two lines. A player can have several entries, because he played several games with the same line, and possibly against different opponents in a tournament.
• Searching general opening, or by type of game – Of course you can also search by opening or type of game. An example, in Dvoretsky’s Topalov Attack, the main line is the Montserrat Defense, which has been played 4000 times, while the Over the Board Style (OTBS) has been played 5,000 times. Most people who play Chessbase occasionally, will have no trouble giving the OTBS a try.

Honestly, I struggled for a bit to find some of my old games, and having to look for them one by one was inconvenient. If you are a serious chess player that already knows the game, this program is great, but for beginners, or for players that play relatively rarely and do not remember the name of all of their games, it is difficult to use.

The graphical interface is well implemented and while I found a few glitches to be minor and did not adversely affect the operation of the program, but it could still be improved. For example, it would be nice if some of the opened windows would be locked to the current view, so if it is still necessary to reuse the window, the program will be saved from having to remember that you were in the GUI, when you got back to it. While this is a given on most chess-playing programs, I thought it would a good addition to Chess Games.
