business continuity planning is an important part of risk management. when you think about building a supply chain, it is important to think about the supply chain as a system of interconnected components. these components can be physical or virtual. that is, you can think about components as physical or virtual components. components can be managed on a common basis or individually. for example, a retail company can segment its supply chain or put individual store locations into a distribution center. this is one way to control the supply chain.

supply chain regionalization is another way of managing the supply chain. in this case, the same entity could build warehouses in different locations. this can reduce transportation costs and even improve supply chain resilience.

a good example of regionalization is amazon.com. amazon’s founder, jeff bezos, has taken advantage of regional demand patterns to reduce transportation costs. for instance, amazon has large warehouses in los angeles and new york, which are closer to consumers in those areas, as well as smaller warehouses in other parts of the country. because amazon is the largest online retailer, its supply chain is enormous.

in addition to segmenting the supply chain or regionalizing it, another way of reducing supply chain fragility is to design the business continuity plan to account for the inherent fragility of the supply chain. sometimes this is called the “last-mile problem.” consider that an auto manufacturer might have a business continuity plan that requires only one vehicle to be sent to a certain location to maintain service. this may be acceptable if the auto manufacturer has many different vehicles. but suppose the company only has one vehicle. at best, it can only maintain service if the vehicle is dispatched to the location. this is one of the main reasons that many companies, like the auto manufacturer, are moving toward centralizing parts production and distribution.
