every time a salman khan starrer comes out, its seems like every jounalist and reviewer repeats the same tired lines. the film may not be great in the sense that it is consistent, it may lack surprise and it may lack heart but it provides entertainment and action. it too succeeds in this on the whole. in the scenes where the cinematic talents of sanjay dutt and akshay kumar work to the best they can, it provides some good measure of entertainment. the visuals are sometimes lush, but the form is basic and very familiar.
and even when the film gets it right, its not a great film. bhardwaj tries to make the film something different by creating a seemingly neat setup. we have a tony jaiswal, who has grown up in delhi, and has become a man at heart. we have a corrupt chief minister, who has grown rich and powerful by bribing local politicians. we have local politicians who have made themselves rich from the deal, which means sanjay dutt in congress and akshay kumar in the opposition. we have an advocate, who is an aspiring politician and has support from a local congress leader. but most importantly we have a bunch of school girls who are volunteers at a dalit center. and on the face of it, the story is all there to make it to the screen. bhardwaj captures this with such sharp accuracy it makes you wince at the thought of what a given day would be like in this ridiculously unlikely story. but the flip side is the film remains somewhat generic and soon you find yourself hitting the scene by-the-by.
sure it was a classy matinee movie, but who could ask for more? i could spot at least a good 50% of the cast, vibha bharadwaj was present and so was her husband ritesh shah , the writer of the story that inspired the film. the film was one of those ones to check out, for me, like kahaani ghar ghar kii, mili, shame, brick lane and the new raanjhanaa. i was sad to see ritesh shah was not there, and so was the soundtrack composer vishal bhardwaj. i would like to think, we would have gotten more of bhardwajs iconic, sombre but capable music if he had been there.
Yup no more episodes of billy and shannon or ( if you follow the news of these apple employees) the apple cart is being reversed. so                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Â
