Roblox is a great place to teach my children game making. It’s free to play and easy to learn. I don’t see a lot of kids teaching their own games. We have a lot of school budgets to stretch and many toys to purchase, I don’t want to spend money or time on creating a game. These games teach kids that making games is something they can do. They get the basic coding of a game and learn how to run it and play it.
In the past few years, the quality of the games has really gone up. It’s amazing that kids today can make simple games on a phone, tablet or PC and make money doing it. Back when I used to write on Roblox, I used to use the word ‘bullet-hell’ to describe the way action games force you to swing your way through a massive battlefield where your heart is on the line. Of course, bullets aren’t real bullets so I just modified the definition to fit this post.

One thing I’ve always admired in 2D platformers is that instead of making them with some semblance of physics, they go all-in on them. Platforming games going for a flow, mix platforming mechanics like gravity, momentum and collision into one, action-packed experience where each hit matters and each move feels more alive. A lot of mechanics that I associate with shooters, like sprinting and fall speed, make their way into this genre in order to create a holistic, fast-paced experience.

This is what Super Mario Galaxy did for 2D platformers. The general sense of speed and urgency carries over to every move players make while playing this game. Mario isn’t the only character that has the ability to jump, dash, turn, pull down an object, grab ledges and momentum by the tail. The camera perspective also perfectly showcases this, as you see the world from a zen view.

Whether you feel retro or new, this game is going to appeal to you in one way or another. Make sure you check it out and you enjoy it.
