Android: keeping “selected” data for a RecyclerView

I have a problem, I want to create a custom RecyclerView with the following:
1 – 6 cards in a first row
2 – 3 cards in the second row
3 – 3 cards in the third row
1-3 cards in the fourth row.

Each card will have a + in the left top corner.
In order to keep a card “selected” on touch, I was thinking to create 4 kinds of Arraylist, that will be, well, an Arraylist… I will keep them in my Activity, and will have something like this:
ArrayList checkedItemIndex = new ArrayList();
ArrayList selectedItemIndex = new ArrayList();

On touch, I will iterate through my list and set the index of the card to its position in the array. On click, I will check if the selectedItemIndex contains the index of the touch list and set that card to selected.
For now, I was thinking to create 4 kind of ArrayList (the first and second in my RecyclerView, the other two on my Activity), but I was wondering if there was a better way of doing it.
