1. **Open Photoshop**.

Start Photoshop as an active file.

The Quick Start guide opens at the Welcome screen, as shown in Figure 1-3, with all of the features you can use to edit images.

2. **Click Open to open the first file you want to work on in Photoshop.**

The Open dialog box appears. Navigate to the folder you want to open (for example, to D:PhotoshopNew Folders), and then click Open.

3. **Click the New button.**

The New dialog box opens. Select Adobe Photoshop from the list of formats, as shown in Figure 1-4, and click OK.

5. **Open the next file you want to work on.**

If you have several files open, Photoshop opens the last image file you opened.

6. **Repeat Steps 2–5 to open other files.**
7. **Make sure the Graphics panel is the one you want to use.**

On a Mac, click the Graphics icon on the left side of the application window, and on Windows 7 or later, click the Graphics button near the bottom of the Photoshop window. (On a Macintosh computer with OS X 10.5.8 or later, click the Graphics icon on the left side of the Photoshop window.) (See Chapter 3 for more about the Graphics panel and Chapter 12 for more about the Color panel.)

8. **To resize the graphics window, hold the ALT (or Control) key, and drag to resize the window.**

Your cursor changes to four small handles as you hold down the ALT key and drag to resize the graphics window. Release the ALT key and the handles revert to the four colored squares.

9. **Drag the corners of the graphics window to resize the graphics area to fit the image.**

A corner of the graphics window becomes a colored square as you drag to resize the image; then when you release the mouse button, the square resizes the image.

10. **Click the Graphics button or click the Graphics icon on the left side of the Photoshop window to return to the Graphics panel.**

How to make a realistic texture using Photoshop brushes

To create a realistic texture we need to first decide what kind of wood we want to make the texture from. We can take a close up photo of a piece of wood we like and trace the contours of the wood in Photoshop.

It will give a better result if you change the transparency of the background when tracing, but you can go back to it after you have your wood texture.

Now we can use the Wood template to create the texture and select the type of wood we want to use:

Next, we need to decide what kind of materials we want the texture to be made from and start creating Photoshop brushes that will create the materials.

We will make our texture from different types of material. We will use plants (leaves and flowers). Metal (iron), wood, clay, paper and more. We will also make the material textured on the back with a pattern on the front.

We will also make the texture vary in color intensity. You will have to make a lot of textures to get good results.

It is easy to make patterns for Photoshop brushes. A pattern is the pattern with which you create your textures. Patterns have a name which we will look for, to find the pattern that will help us to create the texture we want.

Patterns can be found in many places, not only in Photoshop Elements but in other places too like Google, Tumblr, Picasa etc.

For the plants we will use a pattern that represents the texture of leaves on a plant. We will use a pattern from this site: It is a huge file, with 8,000 leaves. We will cut it down to create a pattern that will be the best tool to texture our plants. It is possible to combine patterns by creating them as a sub-pattern that contains multiple existing patterns.
