I’ve been using Oracle for over 20 years, and I want to make you aware of a problem in the latest version of Oracle’s product, Oracle SQL Developer. Oracle is charging for a download (not a product license) called OWDK (Oracle Universal Database Kernel). This download is not provided with any future versions of Oracle’s SQL Developer because it is not part of the basic installation. There is no reason to charge for a download if it is already part of the installation.

I got engaged to write an urgent email just to let you know about this problem because I fear that many of your visitors are also going to be charged for the download.

Without knowing the details of the current edition of Oracle SQL Developer, here is what I know. According to the latest version of the product download page, the version number of OWDK is now 3.0.4.

I think that there are too many download options (noob and expert versions), and I don’t think that these are clearly indicated. There should be a page on the site to tell you which version of the software that you are installing. However, that page is not visible to visitors.

There are two recommended downloads:

If you are a novice user, the most user friendly version would be with the famous code name of OWDK 3.0.4 (as many of you who are already using Oracle SQL Developer have just downloaded). This version has many known problems and bugs. So, the recommended download is the expert version.
